A diamond grading report is an essential starting point, but it doesn't tell the whole story.
Two diamonds with apparently similar specifications can look remarkably different. Proportions, cut precision, light performance, transparency and the individual character of a diamond all influence what you actually see.

From Antwerp to Northland
Antwerp has been at the heart of the international diamond trade for centuries. For Fishers, it has also become an important part of how we understand, source and select diamonds.
Johnny and Patricia have travelled to Antwerp over two decades, building relationships within the diamond trade and gaining first-hand experience in one of the world's most important diamond centres.
For our clients in Northland, that experience has a very practical purpose. It means we understand the market beyond a supplier's stock list. We can assess options, ask the right questions and help select diamonds for the qualities that matter when you actually see them — beauty, performance and value.
From Antwerp to Whangārei, the objective remains simple: to find the right diamond for the person who will wear it.

Understanding the Diamond Journey
Our understanding of diamonds has taken us beyond the cutting and trading rooms of Antwerp to Botswana, one of the world's most important diamond-producing countries.
Johnny and Patricia were given the rare opportunity to visit major diamond operations in Botswana, including Diamond Trading Company Botswana — gaining a first-hand view of the scale, expertise and complexity behind the journey of a natural diamond.
Experiences like these have given us a broader understanding of where diamonds come from, long before they reach a jewellery store.
First-Hand Experience at Jwaneng
Our visit also took us to Jwaneng, one of the world's most significant diamond mines, where we were able to see the extraordinary scale of a modern diamond operation first-hand.
Standing at the edge of the mine and seeing the enormous equipment involved puts the journey of a natural diamond into perspective. Long before a polished diamond reaches Antwerp — and ultimately our showroom in Whangārei — an immense amount of expertise, infrastructure and human effort sits behind it.
Experiences like this have shaped the way we talk about diamonds at Fishers: with knowledge of not only how they are graded and selected, but where their journey begins.

No two natural diamonds are exactly alike. Their rarity may begin beneath the Earth, but choosing the right one comes down to much more than carat weight, colour and clarity.
At Fishers, we use the grading report as a foundation, then consider the diamond itself — its proportions, cut, light performance, transparency and overall beauty. Just as importantly, we consider what matters to you.

LABORATORY-GROWN DIAMONDS
A Different Origin. The Same Need for Expertise.
Laboratory-grown diamonds have essentially the same chemical, physical and optical properties as natural diamonds. The fundamental difference is their origin — laboratory-grown diamonds are created through technological processes, while natural diamonds formed within the Earth over immense geological time.
For many clients, laboratory-grown diamonds offer the opportunity to achieve greater size or higher specifications within a particular budget. For others, the rarity and natural origin of a natural diamond remain an important part of its meaning.
At Fishers, we work with both. Our role is not to tell you which one you should choose, but to explain the differences clearly — including the very different value considerations — so you can decide what is right for you.
UNDERSTANDING DIAMONDS
What Makes a Beautiful Diamond?
Carat, colour, clarity and cut provide an important framework for comparing diamonds, but a grading report is only part of the picture.
At Fishers, we encourage you to look beyond individual grades and consider how those characteristics work together. A diamond should not simply look impressive on paper — it should look beautiful when you see it.
Of the traditional 4Cs, cut has perhaps the greatest influence on what your eye immediately notices: how effectively a diamond handles light, and the brilliance, fire and sparkle it returns to you.
CUT & LIGHT PERFORMANCE
Cut: Where a Diamond Comes to Life
Cut is not simply the shape of a diamond. It describes how precisely a diamond's proportions, angles and facets work together to interact with light.
When a diamond is beautifully cut, light entering the stone is reflected and returned to the eye as brightness, fire and scintillation — the flashes and sparkle that give a diamond its life.
This is why two diamonds of the same carat weight, colour and clarity can look remarkably different. A grading report helps us narrow the search, but ultimately we want to see a diamond that performs beautifully.
Colour: What Your Eye Sees
For white diamonds, colour grading considers the presence or absence of body colour. Higher grades are increasingly colourless, but the best choice depends on the diamond's shape, setting, metal colour and your own eye.
Rather than simply chasing the highest grade, we help you find the point where beauty and value meet.
Clarity: What Lies Within
Clarity describes the internal and external characteristics of a diamond. Many are microscopic and have little or no effect on how beautiful the diamond appears without magnification.
The goal isn't necessarily the highest clarity grade — it's understanding which characteristics matter and which you may be paying more for without seeing a meaningful difference.
Carat: Weight, Not Size
Carat measures a diamond's weight, not its physical dimensions. Two diamonds of the same carat weight can therefore appear different in size depending on their shape and proportions.
We consider carat alongside dimensions, cut and overall appearance so that your budget is being spent where you can actually appreciate it.
