De Beers Diamonds In Botswana

Johnny & Patricia got the rare opportunity to visit major diamond corporations operating in Botswana, Africa including De Beers Diamond Trading Company Botswana, the world’s largest rough diamond sorting and valuing operation. DTC Botswana is the world’s largest and most sophisticated rough diamond sorting and valuing operation, with a capacity to sort 45 million carats a year. It is a 50/50 joint venture between De Beers and the Government of the Republic of Botswana.

Understandably diamond mines have strict security and extremely limited access. The Jwaneng diamond mine, west of the city of Gabarone in the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, is the richest diamond mine in the world. It is owned by Debswana, a partnership between the De Beers company and the government of Botswana. Jwaneng mine is currently 2 kilometers across at its widest point 650 metres deep.

The mine’s current production output is about 10.6 million carats per year. By regional standards, her public services are strong, she enjoys increasing economic development, education is free, and corruption is largely in check. If approved by Botswana environmental authorities the mine will deepen to 855 metres.
